Techniques

-

As an essential quality of the way the practice has worked, we have always been engaged with practical elegant ways of making buildings and urban projects, in which fabrication is integral to their environments. The emotional experiences derived from buildings are tied to the techniques of their fabrication. These may be developments of familiar materials or unexpected experiences associated with new methods. This has been supported by academic and studio developed research, testing and understanding assembly techniques and materials. Several members of the practice teach and participate in workshops in a range of useful and creative areas. In her role running technical studies in the Intermediate School at the Architectural Association (2nd and 3rd years) Rosamund Diamond took many opportunities to develop knowledge of existing and new techniques for making work.

Sustainability

The practice ethos in terms of sustainability is based on usefulness, and a robust approach to building fabrication founded on a longevity in materials and techniques which can accommodate weathering and use. Projects have been made in the context of continuity of the environment and of craft traditions in building. New ways of making designs have been developed from their local and environmental circumstances. New materials and techniques have been used based on careful research and appropriateness so that they are not used rhetorically but to further the sustainability of environments through their envelopes and through valuable use.
