Brick

-
Brick, which is the great familiar material of many UK cities, has been a basis of many projects, historic and contemporary. Working with existing often modest buildings, brick has been used to differentiate between original and additional work, whilst making anew. In the Oxford brick house, this meant celebrating the unadorned box with a smoother more refined brick relating to the original material. The more precise new material defined the reformed volume of the house, with the force of the reconstruction generated from the remade wall, the new tectonic form, and its possibilities to evoke abstract ideas about comfortable inhabitation.
