Nash Apartment

City of London
2001–2002
-

This duplex apartment is the first of four works our practice has made on the Listed Golden Lane Estate. The original form had been altered and our design transformed the lower floor into a single volume with a kitchen opened to the living space. The design was developed through details to renovate original elements and bespoke them to the client's need for comfortable inhabitation. The tight original spaces were expanded where possible by furniture like interventions and devices to extend daylight deep into rooms. A timber island separates the galley kitchen as a large fixed furniture object Acid etched glass panels were set into the existing bathroom partition. Existing finishes were restored where possible or matched with similar materials. Small glass mosaics were inset into the concrete steps of the cantilevered stairs. A dark industrial endstrip hardwood was laid on the ground floor to replicate the original lost timber floor.
